The Red Center...

Von Tennnant Creek machte ich mich auf um die 500km durch das immer kargere Outback bis nach Alice Springs, im Zentrum von Australien, hinter mich zu bringen. Da es wieder einmal hauptsächlich weite Landschaften ohne viele Besonderheiten zu sehen gab, fuhr ich die Strecke recht flott in fünf Tagen.

In der ersten Nacht campte ich bei den Devils Marbles. Diese riesigen Steinkugeln liegen tatsächlich wie Murmeln in der Gegend verstreut und bieten einen sehr schönen Anblick wenn die Sonne hinter den Steinen untergeht und die Landschaft in ihr rotes Licht taucht. Mit den ersten Sonnenstrahlen fuhr ich weiter Richtung Wycliffe Well. Hier soll sich das Zentrum aller UFO-Sichtungen in Australien befinden. Passend dazu ist das gesamte Roadhouse mit Aliens und Ufos geschmückt und ist auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert. Einen Tag später schlug ich mein Zelt am Central Mt. Stuart auf. Ich freute mich sehr zu lesen dass dies der geographische Mittelpunkt von Australien ist. Um so weiter ich auf meiner Tour ins Zentrum von Australien kam, um so freundlicher und hilfsbereiter wurden die Menschen denen ich begegnete. Immer öfter hielten Autos an, um mir kalte Getränke oder Obst und Schokolade anzubieten.

In Alice Springs angekommen, fand ich einen ziemlich interessanten Campingplatz, auf dem haufenweise Backpacker in ihren Bullis und Zelten wohnen und die Duschen, Küche und den Pool nutzen. Das Witzige ist, dass hier niemand für irgendetwas zahlt. Der perfekte Ort also um mich etwas zu erholen, meine Vorräte aufzufüllen, Zeit mit netten Leuten zu verbringen und abends am Lagerfeuer zu sitzen. Alice Springs ist wieder einmal eine ziemlich langweilige Kleinstadt zwischen den Hügeln der Mac Donnell Ranges, in der es recht wenig zu sehen gibt.

Auch wenn ich bereits im Zentrum von Australien angekommen bin und schon 1700km auf dem Fahrrad zurücklegte, bin ich immer noch nicht ganz in der Mitte meiner Tour angekommen. Mein Plan ist von Alice Springs Richtung Westen in die Mac Donnall Ranges zu fahren. Von dort aus werde ich nach Süden über den Mereenie Loop zum Kings Canyon gelangen. Von dort geht es weiter zum Ayers Rock/ Uluru und zu dem Kata Tjuta. Auf dieser Strecke muss ich mehrere hundert Km auf Dirtroads zurücklegen, ohne die Möglichkeit Wasser aufzufüllen. Ich muss mich also gut vorbereiten um auch diese Etappe sicher hinter mich zu bringen. Nach diesem hoffentlich etwas spannenderen Abschnitt meiner Reise werde ich wieder auf dem Stuart Highway nach Süden weiterfahren. Es liegen also nochmal 1900km vor mir, bis ich hoffentlich in Port Augusta wieder das Meer sehe.

The Red Centre
From Tennant Creek I headed off on my way to get through the 500km dry and deserty  Outback to Alice Springs. Again there was mainly the wide countryside without any perticular places to look at and so I drove that part quiet fast in 5 days.
The first night I camped near the Devils Marbels. Those hughe stoneballs  are really like marbels scattered on the earth and offer a very beautiful view when the sun goes down behind the stones and the countryside is dipped into her red light.
With the first sunrises I cycled on towards Wycliffe Wells. There they say is the hot spot for all Ufo viewings in Australia. Fitting that the complete roadhouse is decorated with aliens and ufos and is well worth visiting.
One day later I put up my tent at Central Mount Stewart. I was very happy to read that this is the geographical centre of australia. The further I got on my tour through the middle of Australia, the friendlier and more helpful the people I met were to me. Quiet often cars stopped and they offered me cool drinks or fruit and choclates.
Arriving at Alice Springs I found a very interesting campingplace where a lot of other travellers were living in their buses and tents, using the showers, the kitchen and the pool.
The best was that nobody payed for anything! The best place for me to recover a little bit, fill up my provisions, have time to spend with good people and enjoy sitting at the fireplace in the evenings..
Alice Springs is once again a quiet boring little town between the hills of the Mac Donnell Ranges with not much to see.
Although I have made it to the middle of Australia and have cycled 1700km on my bike, I still have not made it to the middle of my tour. My plan is to cycle westwards into the Mac Donnell Ranges, from there I will go South over the Mereenie Loop to the Kings Canyon. Further I will get to the Ayers Rock/ Uluru and to Kata Tjuta. On this route I have to cycle a few hundered kilometers on dirtroads without the possibility to fill up my waterreserves.I have to be well prepared to get safely through this part of my trip.
After this hopefully a little bit more interesting part of my journey will continue south on the Stuart Highway again. There are another 1900km in front of me till I hopefully see the ocean again in Port Augusta. That´s the plan for the next few weeks. I will report again if I find internet in the desert.
