Ich
bin in Katherine! Die ersten 390km sind geschafft! Jetzt nur noch 10
mal so viel! ;) :P
Doch
sehe.....
Liebe
Grüße aus Katherine,
Jesse
I am in Katherine! The first 390 km are done! There is now only 10x that much left! ;) :P
The distance to Katherine was still somethig like a test for me. After Katherine the next big town will be Alice Springs, but thats about 1200 km away. I had expected that it would be hard, but the first 390 km showed me clearly how hard it will realy be!
It is merciless hot, the sun burns, it is dry and dusty. Flyes are constantly crawling around my face and packed full with food and water the bike is so heavy. But despite all of that I really have fun! Everyday I have had very nice encounters, meeting people like for example Peter from Austria who has completed driving around the world on his bike or a few backpackers, who stopped and offered me a cold beer after 85 km.
I could watch kangeroos quiet often, but they jump away quickly when they notice me!
There are many older australiens driving around with their campers and they are always very friendly and helpful.
But I am really satisfied when I can put up my tent somewhere in the bush. Then I cook myself something simple and with the feeling of having really done it I fall back on my isomat. In the outback the starry sky is unbelivingly beautiful and it´s wonderful to fall asleep underneath it!
Generally my daily routine in the next time will be: getting up early, trying to get the first 40-50 km done before the sun is to high. The lunchtime I will be hanging around somewhere in the shade and eaing a bit. During the afternoon again 40-50 km biking and then in the outback a few hundred meters away from the road, camping. I expect to nearly every day come across a watering place, sothat it is enough to take 12 liters along. In the heat I need 6-8 liters, if I want to drive 100 km. Then another 2 liters for cooking and a little as reserves. Should that not be enough actually every car and every truck has a canister with water and the people in the outback are always very helpful. Dispite of that I will continue to try to always manage on my own. But that means, I will have to take water for 2 days on a few bits. A bigger problem than the water is though the food. You can get food at the roadhouses however very overpriced, sothat I try to take enough food with me to manage till i find the next supermarket. And that will be from Katherine 700 km away!
It is really a big challenge to cross australia with a bike! I am highly motivatd to carry on.
Till I see the ocean again...
Lots of greetings from Katherine, Jesse.
